The Great Pumpkin Race

We have seen many pumpkins this year and almost all of them showed some merit. The different designs and creative gourd costumes really brought the spirit of Halloween to Moraine Valley this fall. Isaac Gonzalez, a student here at Moraine and a long-time pumpkin enthusiast states, “Pumpkins spice up my life.”   

Unfortunately, only one pumpkin can take the top spot. There were some great contenders this year, and these are their stories.

In all, 36 pumpkins were submitted.  When the top three were announced at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 16 had been sold.  A total of 2,500 votes were cast in the week-long contest.

The proceeds go to student scholarships.  Recipients must be student employees of the Library, and there will be several scholarships awarded this year as the contest raised $773.00 as of press time

The top three pumpkins were awarded trophies and they are as follows:

First Place: Elmo Rising (submitted by Library Circulation Day Shift), Second Place: Gummi Bear (submitted by Library Circulation Night Shift), Third Place: Nemo (Eunice Gomez). Voting was in the traditional Chicago-style: early and often (with plenty of ballot stuffing).  All pumpkins were given a certificate of participation. 

Two submissions “expired” before the winners could be announced.  Schist Happens (submitted by the Geology Club) and Assigned Watermelon/Identifies as Pumpkin (submitted by GASP! Club) did not survive. (See Centerfold for pictures.)
