Lauren Hassen, Student Trustee

Hello! It’s wonderful having all of our Moraine Valley students, staff, and faculty back for the 2020-2021 school year. Although we will be attending classes remotely for this fall semester –  and I completely understand it can be overwhelming and stressful at times due to the current state of the world – I want you to know that there are many resources we have available for students remotely to help us all succeed during these times. I want to name a few that I have been a part of for awhile, and have helped me a lot throughout my first year at Moraine Valley.

First, Multicultural Student Affairs has several organizations, clubs, and activities in order to support, encourage, and guide students of color. You can contact MSA at (708) 974-5475 or email stewarta@morainevalley.edu and richardst27@morainevalley.edu.

Second, The TRIO Program is also a wonderful program for the following types of students: first generation students, students with disabilities, and/or students from marginalized communities with several tools such as private tutors, help filling out college applications, help with transferring to a four year university, emotional support, and so much more. If you think you are eligible and would like to apply, please contact TRIO at TrioSSS@morainevalley.edu or call 708-974-5648.

Third, the tutoring center is also open to help students in multiple subjects such as math, science, reading, writing, and business. They have study groups available through Zoom, and plenty more available to help you succeed this semester. You can get in touch with a tutor lead at  emailtutoringcenter@morainevalley.edu or call (708) 974-5746.

Finally, I also think that Student Life is so very important during times like these to keep in touch with your peers and overall just have fun. You can contact Student Life at (708) 974-5717 or email studentlife@morainevalley.edu. Check in with Amanda O’Oonnor, Director of Student Life at oconnora38@morinaevalley.edu. Each organization and program listed is designed for students to feel less stressed and be successful. Also there will be many online events, activities, and a lot more from MSA, TRIO, the Tutoring Center, and Student Life so please keep in contact with them and keep your eyes open for future emails and texts.

I know that each and every one of us are incredibly hard working and intelligent, and we will have a wonderful semester as long as we work together, be kind, and be patient.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me at hassenl2@student.morainevalley.edu.
