Avenue Beat is a relatively new band formed by three 21 year-old friends named Sam Backoff, Savana Santos and Sami Bearden. Sam and Savana were childhood friends and met Sami at a musical theatre camp when they were 14 years old. The band occasionally played small shows, where they were discovered by Charly Salvatore and have been working with him since. The trio jokingly put out a snippet of a new song on the popular app TikTok which blew up with millions of views. The fans demanded a full song, which led to the release of their new single, “F2020” on July 10. On the first day of the song’s release, it had already made its way onto the radio and into well-known magazines.

“F2020” is said to be the “song of the year” because of how relatable it is. Every start of a new year, people make lists of positive resolutions to accomplish by the end of the year. However, this year had different plans for us all. This rang especially true for the trio as they
sang “December 31st, I grabbed a beer/Threw it up, said, “2020 is my year, b—-es”/And I honestly thought that that was true/Until I gave this motherf—er like a month or two/This is getting kind of ridiculous at this point.” We can recognize this year might have not gone as planned.
Then we are told some difficulties they have personally faced recently, “Yo, my cat died and a global pandemic took over my life/And I put out some music that nobody liked.” Many others can relate to having such difficult experiences this year specifically. The chorus then repeats, “Lowkey f— 2020/ Still sad, still ain’t got no money/ I ain’t got a watch up on my wrist/ I just got some s— I gotta fix, yeah/ Lowkey f— 2020,” which really emphasizes their longing for the next year to arrive already.
Having to quarantine due to the Coronavirus outbreak was the inspiration behind this song because we have all been affected by it in one way or another. They are reflecting on not only their own, but everyone’s struggles this year.
With no surprise, this is one of the most listened-to songs right now and it is because of the energy Avenue Beat radiates. They understand how exhausting this entire year has been and want others to share their own experiences as well by listening and using this song. The mood of this song really says it with no explanation other than, “F2020.”
