How to be okay about the 2024 presidential election results.

On Nov. 6, Donald Trump was announced as the winner of the 2024 presidential election beating out Vice President Kamala Harris, winning every blue wall state (Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan) that Harris needed for victory. These results were not what half the country wanted to hear. The next four years are going to be tough. Some of us are going to want to scream every time Trump opens his mouth, and wonder why his spray tan is worse.

Trump’s agenda is not a good one: Project 2025, mass deportations, anti-LGBTQ legislation, abortion restrictions, an anti-veteran agenda, environmental restrictions, pardon for Jan 6th insurrectionists, education reform, economic troubles, no longer having student loan debt forgiveness going into effect, and the hate rhetoric is going to stay.

There is still hope though despite this agenda; the midterms are in 2026 which is the next chance to stop those plans from taking effect, and the presidential race for 2028 looks hopeful with the possible candidates of California Governor Gavin Newsome, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

I know that the person who will be President and Vice President is scary and that some of the people returning to Congress are scary, but remember there are a lot of good people in Congress to help protect people’s rights and have a voice for us. If you are worried about Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene returning to Congress, there are still the two Democratic Senators from Georgia, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. If you are worried about Texas Senator Ted Cruz returning to the Senate, there is still Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, and if you are worried and annoyed that Matt Gaetz is returning to Congress for Florida, Jared Moskowitz won his re-election bid to go back to the house for Florida.

Remember even though Democrats will lose the Senate, Chuck Schumer will still be there to guide the Democratic Party as the minority leader, and Mitch McConnell has already announced his plans to step out of the Majority Leader role. If you are worried about the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries won his re-election bid, and will continue to serve as the voice for the Democratic Party. For the first time ever, there will be two black woman serving in the United States Senate, Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware as well as also electing the first transgender women in the House, Sarah McBride from Delaware. Please do not forget the most important person in Congress, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who won re-election to the Senate for six more years.

It will all be okay, I promise. It will be hard but we have been down this road before and we got through it. This is the greatest country in the world, and it still is regardless of who the President will be in January. Please do not think everything is over. There are people in elected offices who will fight for you if you are scared.

One more bit of comfort, Saturday Night Live is back in session this week and Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show, and John Oliver will be here to get us through the next few years. As Monsters, Inc. all taught us, laughter is more powerful than scared screams.

Please take a deep breath, Everything will be okay.

I promise.
