Entering last Tuesday, the Cyclones softball team needed a doubleheader sweep of Waubonsee Community College to claim their second consecutive Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference championship, and they did just that.

With a decisive 7-2 victory in the first game, the Cyclones could feel the title within their grasp and capitalized with a 14-2 mercy-rule victory in game two.

After homering and having multiple hits in the two clinching games, Alexandria Palumbo summed up the key factor that propelled the Cyclones to an undefeated conference season this year.

“Playing as a team,” Palumbo said. “We’re all pretty close, so when people make mistakes, we pick them up. When people do good we hype them up.”

The team has one last double-header against Triton College tomorrow to wrap up the regular season.

Currently sitting at a 20-13-1 record, the squad awaits a berth at the regional quarterfinals, which kick off on May 10.
