Financial assistance is still available through state and federal grants.

It’s time to register for spring classes and during a time like this, money can be quite hard to come by. I know from personal experience that no one likes to admit they are dealing with a financial burden, but I just want to explain that being financially unstable is perfectly normal and there are plenty of ways for you to pay for your classes and books. At Moraine Valley Community College, it’s extremely important to our school that students are able to afford their classes. Due to the transitions and losses of the current pandemic our college has multiple avenues for students to use in order to afford classes, books, and even bills at home.

The CARES Act was created for students as an emergency financial aid grant, in order to apply you need to have a completed FAFSA application and paperwork given to you from the financial aid office. If you are applicable, you will receive between $600-$1,000! This money could definitely help with paying for classes, books, or other educational necessities. If you have already tried to apply for CARES and unfortunately were not eligible to receive any money, you may be eligible for the GEERS which is the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund. In order to be eligible you must: register for course(s) for the spring 2021 semester, remain in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher, meet with an Academic Advisor to ensure you are on track to complete your program of study, and maintain continuous contact with your assigned mentor to help navigate any obstacles you may face in completing your academic goals.

If you are not able to receive any reward money from either of these funds you can still apply for scholarships through your MVConnect Student Portal and receive up to $500 for certain scholarships! You can check out all the current scholarships Moraine Valley Community College has available here. You can access the CARES Act information through here. You can also receive the GEERS Fund information by emailing richardst27@morainevalley.edu or contact me at hassenl2@student.morainevalley.edu.
