My fellow students,
The word trust is the main element in the word Trustee, and as such, your trust is placed in the Student Trustee to look out for our students, our college, and all the resources in it. It is a huge responsibility, and today, I encourage you all to take part in this leadership role, as well as other opportunities to improve your skillset, network, and resume.
As the Student Trustee of Moraine Valley Community College, it is my job to represent the student body, its opinions, thoughts, and concerns to our Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is a team that makes decisions that influence our campus. It is important they know the students’ view before making these decisions, and that is where the Student Trustee comes in! The Student Trustee serves for a whole year, starting and ending in April.
Nematallah Hasan
Student Trustee 2022-23
I believe this is a hidden gem of our campus because it is a great opportunity, but not many students know about this. This role teaches you a lot about our campus, and how to work in a professional setting. The Student Trustee sees firsthand the effort our Board makes to help our students succeed.
What else are the Student Trustee’s roles and responsibilities? The Student Trustee writes articles for the Glacier, attends Board meetings to give a monthly report, and attend SAC meetings, which are meetings with other Student Trustees. They also hold office hours for our students.
However, in order to be a Student Trustee, one has to go through an application process with certain requirements. First, they need to attend two board meetings prior to the board meeting in April. Our next two meeting dates are February 21 and March 21, and the next Student Trustee will be sworn in office at the following meeting, April 18. All Board meetings take place at 6:00 pm, and they can be attended in person, or online. An applicant also needs to have two letters of recommendation. The Student Trustee gets to set goals for how they would like to help our students. For me, my goal is to highlight lesser-known resources on our campus, so that you, the student, can enjoy and utilize them.
This is a position that I highly recommend you apply for. The deadline to apply is this Thursday, February 23 at 5:00 pm.
Are you looking for additional ways to boost your resume? Interested in extending your network connections? If you are not interested in being Student Trustee, there are still lots of leadership roles available on campus, and I encourage you to take advantage of them. For example, clubs and organizations are always looking for students to take leadership roles. There are also lots of ways to improve your skillset and influence our campus. For example, would you like to amplify your voice and add to our online newspaper? You can join our newspaper organization, The Glacier! Are you looking for an internship? The Job Resource Center can help you land one! Possibilities are endless on our campus!
In whatever role you choose to pursue, as long as you put your mind to it, carry out the responsibilities with integrity, and give your best effort, then I trust that you will go on to do amazing things.
