New student trustee strives to help students transition to college setting

Staff and students at Moraine Valley Community College, it is so wonderful to meet you! My name is Delilah Wietasch and I’m absolutely honored and looking forward to being your Student Trustee for the 2021-2022 school year.

I came to Moraine Valley with the purpose of seeking higher education and the determination to become a teacher. As the second Student Trustee to be sworn in online, I’m ready to help the student body have their voice heard.

This is such an amazing opportunity, especially with a pandemic occurring. Many students feel overwhelmed with taking both online classes and hybrid classes because some learn better in the classroom. However, letting someone know that you’re there for them, even if it is a stranger, can help other students know they aren’t alone in struggling with online learning. This makes others feel less alone in the situation and can help give you someone to talk to if you feel that no one else is going to listen to the obstacles students face.

My primary focus as the Student Trustee is to improve the center of disabilities, starting with its name, and to help the transition from high school to college to be easier for students who enroll in Moraine Valley. When I started Moraine Valley, I felt alone and lost, and overall overwhelmed. It was even worse that I was shy and didn’t want to burden anyone by asking for help. I know many incoming students or current students feel this way and it’s completely normal and okay to feel this way. Therefore, one of my first goals as your Student Trustee is to help others transition into the higher education setting. I’m hoping that by the fall we slowly start to open back up so I can help more students on campus and to hold office hours to help my peers! I’ve begun working alongside our wonderful staff at Moraine to help these ideas become a reality.
