MV women’s soccer team dominated Morton College on Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a score of 2-1. It started off with the Cyclones warming up with a quick scrimmage against one another to get ready for the game. The Cyclones shook hands with the referees and with the Morton Panthers before the match started. Then the whistle blew, and the game began.

It started off strong with Cyclone midfielder Camila Barragan attempting to score against the Panthers. Morton tried to keep up, but to no avail because of amazing saves from goalkeeper Ximena Delgado. The Cyclones still helped with defending their goalie, calling plays and communicating with one another and their coaches. A foul called against Morton for tugging led to a free kick for Moraine. The panthers tried to line up and block midfielder Camila Barragan, but she kicked to the top left and scored the first goal. Fans cheered as the Cyclones hugged and celebrated, but went right back to business.

The Cyclones kept up with their defense and offense when forward Alyssa Juarez moved passed Morton, passing the ball to midfield Olivia Jeziorczak, who passed to forward Heather Canny, scoring the second goal for Moraine ending the first half.

However, at the beginning of the second half the Panthers came back fiercely, scoring their first goal. That motivated the Cyclones to run a more concerted defense. The amazing teamwork displayed from start to finish, including passes, blocks and steals, kept the Cyclones in the lead, and paid off as the second half came to an end with a win for Moraine.

Coach Roman commented “It was a great game, great players, they were really strong in the first half and I’m very proud of my girls.” After the game the coaches gave the women a good pep talk and then the ladies were buzzing, walking off the field celebrating with one another. It was an intense game for the Cyclones but worth the watch.

Their next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. against Prairie State College, and will celebrate the sophomore players.
